How to write a healthcare vacancy brief that attracts the right people

A practical vacancy brief gives candidates enough context to make an informed decision and helps recruiters focus on the people most likely to fit the role.

A useful healthcare vacancy brief does more than list duties. It explains the setting, the people the service supports and what a successful appointment needs to achieve.

Start with the reason for the vacancy. A replacement hire, a newly created post and additional seasonal capacity each require a different search. Explain the team structure, reporting line, working pattern and any genuine service pressures without including confidential information.

Separate essential requirements from preferences. Professional registration, qualifications and regulated checks may be essential. Experience with a particular system or setting may be helpful, but an unnecessarily long list can discourage capable applicants whose transferable experience deserves consideration.

Describe the day-to-day work in plain language. Candidates want to understand the balance of direct care, documentation, teamwork, leadership and out-of-hours responsibilities. Clear expectations reduce unsuitable applications and support more useful interview conversations.

Include the practical details before publication. Confirm the location, working pattern, contract type, salary or rate, benefits, application process and closing date. If something is still being decided, resolve it rather than asking candidates to guess.

Finally, review the brief from the candidate's perspective. It should be accurate, inclusive and specific enough for someone to decide whether the opportunity fits their experience and next step.
